CHAPTER 11

Tosca was on. She oozed more charm than a season of The Bachelor. She’d had Stephen and Katy laughing within minutes. She’d learned the names and sports of Greg and Tomas’s kids, and she’d complimented Gloria and Jack on the level pruning of their boxwood shrubs by the curb. And she’d gushed to Stephen about the tile work around the pool.

Within five minutes, everyone loved her. Hell, Bronx would’ve turned over his wallet.

And to think she’d learned it all when he was still in school trying to figure out how to get into a female’s robes. He almost shook his head. But like everyone else, he was riveted.

Her laughter tinkled like a magical bell that could grant listeners their greatest wishes. “And then Brandon kept looping through the cul-de-sac and said we must’ve taken a wrong turn.”

He nearly choked on his drink as everyone laughed. Stephen had offered him some sort of local brew that was extra hoppy and too warm to enjoy. Exactly what Tosca said he’d drink. As Tosca told them all how he’d supposedly met her parents, laughter rang around the back patio—with impeccable stonework around the fire pit. Love the slate!

Bronx had to keep from gawking when Tosca grinned and tilted her head to the side. It was like she was flirting with everyone at the party. And it was working.

As if Tosca sensed his consternation, she eyed the tennis bracelet on Katy’s wrist. “Oh my, that’s gorgeous. Where did you get it?”

Katy beamed as she held her arm out like she’d been waiting for someone to notice the ring of diamonds around her wrist. “Stephen got it for me. Our fifth anniversary.”

Tosca gushed and peppered them with questions about how they’d met until Katy was the one telling stories, effectively taking the focus off them until Katy’s phone dinged.

“Oh!” She spun, waving her phone in the air. “Gena and Bennie are here.”

Bronx sifted through the info Sierra had gathered on the neighborhood. Gena and Bennie Duncan lived two houses down from the safe house. They’d been gone since Bronx and Tosca had been there.

Tosca crossed one leg over the other. Her golden sandals were “a steal” from an online retailer he’d never heard of, but when she’d peeped out the window a few days ago, she’d noticed Katy wore this brand. And those damn shoes were like a marquee for the quickie DIY pedicure she’d given herself because “trust me, they’re all going to have their fingers and toes done.”

She wasn’t wrong.

Bronx had walked out with his standard finger comb, which girls had never seemed to have a problem with before, but Tosca had marched up to him and ruffled his strands. Then the look of concentration she’d adopted had
